Citizens serve on many of these boards and offer their expertise and input about larger programs. They even make recommendations to the City Commission.

The Civil Service Board Office is an entity that was established by the residents of the City of Miami to provide a fair merit based system of employment by ensuring that individuals are hired, promoted, and retained based upon “what they know” and not “who they know”. Their duties and responsibilities cover three (3) major functions: Administrative, Legislative and Quasi-judicial.

Enabled by the City's Historic Preservation Ordinance, the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board (HEPB) is comprised of citizen appointees who represent the disciplines of architecture, history and historic preservation, as well as the interests of the business and neighborhood communities.
The purpose of this board is to advise and make recommendations to the City Commission concerning amendments to the Zoning Ordinance, the Miami Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan, and the Miami City Code; to act as the local planning agency pursuant to section 163.3174, Florida Statutes; and to make determinations on applications for Variance and Exceptions.
In 2019, the City of Miami consolidated the Sea Level Rise Committee and Waterfront Advisory Board into the Climate Resilience Committee. The charge of the Committee has expanded to include: (1) recommending, to the Commission, changes to City Code and policy that will help the City thrive in the face of all climate change threats, and (2) providing input on City-owned waterfront land use issues.
The purpose of the Urban Development Review Board (UDRB) is to review and recommend to the Director of Planning and Zoning for approval, approval with conditions or denial of projects within certain zoning districts based on the urban quality, compatibility and contribution to the architectural and social fabric of the City.
The purpose of the Wynwood Design Review Committee (WDRC) is to review and recommend to the Director of Planning and Zoning and the Urban Development Review Board (UDRB), whether the design of developments and/or improvements to properties within the boundaries of the NRD-1 are compatible with the character of the Wynwood Arts District.
The Bond Oversight Board has been formed to oversee the project management and progress reporting, complementing the standard oversight provided by the City Commission, to ensure transparency and accountability.
This advisory board makes recommendations to the mayor, City Commission and City Manager regarding endorsement or support of specific art and entertainment special events, performance and productions.
