HIV, which stands for human immunodeficiency virus, is a viral infection that specifically targets the immune system of the human body. If left untreated, HIV can progress into a condition called AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Unfortunately, there is currently no definitive cure for HIV, meaning individuals who contract the virus will have it for the duration of their lives. However, proper medical care and treatment can effectively manage the virus.

With the help of appropriate medical intervention, individuals living with HIV can successfully control the virus and lead long and healthy lives. Moreover, by adhering to effective HIV treatment, they can also safeguard their partners from contracting the virus. It is important to note that individuals who maintain an undetectable viral load for a minimum of six consecutive months are unable to transmit HIV through sexual intercourse. This principle is commonly referred to as "undetectable equals untransmittable". 

Yes, for a majority of individuals, flu-like symptoms typically manifest within a timeframe of 2 to 4 weeks following HIV infection. These symptoms can persist for a few days or even stretch out for several weeks. However, it is crucial to understand that experiencing these flu-like symptoms alone does not necessarily indicate the presence of HIV, as other illnesses can produce similar symptoms.

It is worth noting that a significant portion of people infected with HIV may not exhibit any symptoms at all. Consequently, the only definitive method to ascertain whether one has contracted HIV is by undergoing proper testing. Regular testing is imperative to accurately determine one's HIV status.

Need access to sexual health services? The University of Miami RAPID Program provides innovative and accessible approaches to infectious diseases prevention and treatment. The team is passionate about lowering barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP), and HIV care entry for people living in the City of Miami. This team offers trusted care and resources to keep you healthy. The RAPID program offers a continuum of care for sexual health:

• STI and HIV testing: They provide free and confidential same-day testing for a wide range of STIs with fast results – including immediate results for rapid HIV tests. They also provide treatment for those with positive tests.

• PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis): If you are HIV-negative and want to protect yourself from infection, the team can provide the required evaluation, consultation, and prescription for medications to prevent HIV infection.

• nPEP (post-exposure prophylaxis): If you may have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours and are worried about infection, medication can provide protection. The team can provide medical consultation and facilitate access to nPEP medication.

• Rapid Entry to HIV Care and Engagement: The team can provide same-day enrollment into HIV care for those with a new diagnosis or seeking re-engagement. They provide immediate, convenient, and streamlined access to medical care and medication.

• Gender Affirming Services: The GenWell service offers personalized, holistic care for transgender people to enhance mental and physical well-being. They offer gender wellness counseling, prescriptions for feminizing and masculinizing hormones, HIV prevention, and referrals for consultations with surgeons and other specialists.

The UM Mobile PrEP Program provides PrEP, nPEP, and STI testing and treatment as well as HIV rapid entry into care at community sites in Miami-Dade County. All services are provided at no cost to clients. All are welcome regardless of insurance or immigration/residency status. They offer afternoon and evening hours at various community sites. Currently, the community site in the City of Miami is in Liberty City.
