City of Miami Welcomes Harvard Kennedy School Fellows

Students learned about the unique challenges facing Miami and how the City is addressing climate adaptation

(Miami, FL January 23, 2019)- Today, City of Miami welcomed eight fellows from the Harvard Kennedy School who traveled to the Magic City to participate in a Climate Adaptation Round Table. The fellows traveled to Miami to learn about the innovative and forward leaning measures the City is taking to understand and mitigate the effects of climate change. The discussion presented by variousDepartment Directorsfocused onthe city's climate adaptation infrastructure plans and strategies.

“I’m proud of our City staff for taking the initiative to host this important discussion with a group of young leaders, which may set the foundation for their future by enhancing their practical expertiseto be able to address climate-related challenges and find solutions to accelerateadaption in their home communities,” expressed City Manager Emilio Gonzalez.

TheCenter for Public Leadership and Louis Bacon Environmental Leadership Fellowstraveled to Miami to learn more about the relationship between development and climate adaptation as well as the current plans for the Miami Forever Bond. The two-hour discussion touched on the City's overall strategy, planning standards, storm water infrastructure, the Miami Forever Bond, and others.

The students’ professional background and academic work focuses primarily in environmental policies that relate to transportation, energy, access to capital for clean energy transition, nature conservation, sustainable development, renewable energy development, global sustainability, carbon emissions reduction and clean water.

As a global leader in climate adaption, the City of Miami will continue tocollaborate both internally and externally with other stakeholders to effectively create a more resilient future for Miami. Next month, the 8th Secretary-General of the UNBan Ki-moon willmeet for the first time with Mayor Suarez - only US Mayor selected for the Global Commission on Adaptation.
