Fast, In‑Person Permit Review for Small Home Projects

Available Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Walk‑Thru Express is a quick, in‑person review option for homeowners who need permits for small residential projects. Many eligible projects can receive same‑day permit approval.

What Projects Qualify?

You can use Walk‑Thru Express for the following types of home projects:

  • Fences (6 feet or under)
  • Driveways and pavers
  • Windows, doors, shutters, skylights, garage doors
  • Roofing
  • Kitchen or bathroom remodels
  • Interior or partial demolition
  • Prefabricated sheds
  • Minor, non‑structural repairs
  • Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) repair permits
Projects NOT eligible:
  • Homes in historic districts
  • Projects needing structural review (examples: fences over 6 feet)
  • Properties with open code violations
  • After‑the‑fact/minor legalization work

Hours & Guidelines 

  • Service is offered Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM
  • If your project is within the eligible scope, is ready for review, your documents/drawings have been uploaded to ProjectDox, and you are added to the waiting list at the Inspections Counter (4th Floor) by 12:30 PM you will receive 
  • IMPORTANT: Each person may bring up to 3 permit applications (process numbers) 

Need Help? 

  • If you need assistance with your project or document/drawing upload, prior to your Walk-Thru Express visit, the Homeowner Assistance Office opens at 7:30 AM, and is located on 1st Floor lobby of the MRC
  • Please make sure you read documents requirements listed at the bottom of this page.
  • Once your project is ready for review, and your documents are uploaded, you may go to the Inspections Counter on the 4th Floor where the staff can add you to the Walk-Thru Express waiting list by 12:30 PM. 

What You Need Before You Arrive

If you already started your permit online in iBuild:

  • You should have applied using the Homeowner’s Express Review option to be eligible for the Walk-Thru Express review service
  • Have your building department process number (BD)
  • Upload the required documents/drawings into ProjectDox 
  • Ensure you have received an email stating your application is ready for review and both iBuild and ProjectDox show the status as “in review.”
If you haven’t started your project yet:
  • Visit the Homeowner Assistance Office (1st Floor) for help creating your project and uploading documents and drawings.
Document Requirements for In-Person Scanning Help

If you bring physical documents for scanning:

  • Document size maximum limit: 8.5” × 11”
  • Plan size maximum limit: 11” × 17”
  • USB drives are not accepted
  • You may email digital files to staff during your session with the Homeowner Assistance team

Am I Qualified for Walk‑Thru Express?

Use this quick checklist to see if your home project qualifies for same‑day, in‑person permit review.

1. Is your project eligible?

Check YES if your project is one of the following:

  • Fence 6 ft or under
  • Driveway or pavers
  • Windows, doors, shutters, skylights, or garage doors
  • Roofing work
  • Kitchen or bathroom remodel
  • Interior or partial demolition
  • Prefabricated residential shed
  • Minor repairs that do not require structural review
  •  Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing repair permit (MEP)

If your project appears on this list → You may qualify.

2. Is your project NOT eligible?

If any of the following apply, Walk‑Thru Express is not available:

  • Property is in a historic district
  • Project requires structural review (example: fence over 6 ft)
  • Project involves after‑the‑fact/legalization
  • Property has open or unresolved code violations

If you checked ANY of these → Not eligible for Walk‑Thru Express.

3. Are your permit application materials ready?

Before arriving, you must have:

  • An iBuild project created under Homeowner’s Express Review
  • A building department process number (BD)
  • Required documents uploaded to ProjectDox
  • Your applications status in both iBuild and ProjectDox must show as “in review.”

If you checked ALL of these → You are ready for Walk‑Thru Express, go to 4th Floor Inspections Counter
If not → You can get help at the Homeowner Assistance Office, 1st Floor Lobby
