City of Miami Manager James Reyes has appointed Helena Poleo as the new Director of Communications, marking a new day in the City of Miami and reinforcing the City’s commitment to clear, transparent, and responsive communication with residents and stakeholders.
Poleo brings more than 25 years of experience in journalism, public affairs, crisis communications, and government media relations to the City’s Communications Department.
“Helena is a proven communications leader with deep experience in government, crisis response, and in the media,” said City Manager James Reyes. “Her appointment represents a new day in the City of Miami—one focused on transparency, accountability, and proactive engagement with the public. I am confident she will elevate how we communicate and connect with our community.”
A former reporter and foreign correspondent, Poleo covered politics, immigration, and local news for major English- and Spanish-language publications before transitioning into public service. She previously served as Press Director for the Office of the Mayor of Miami under Mayor Manny Diaz and later created the Public Information Department for the City of Doral. Her background uniquely positions her to lead the City’s communications during both routine operations and critical moments.
“I am honored to return to the City of Miami at such a historic time,” said Poleo. “I look forward to working with City Manager Reyes, our elected leaders, and City staff to ensure residents receive timely, accurate information and feel connected to the work being done on their behalf.”
A native of Venezuela, Poleo is a magna cum laude graduate of Florida International University’s School of Journalism and holds a certificate in Women in Leadership from Cornell University. She has received numerous professional honors for her leadership and service.
As Director of Communications, Poleo will oversee the City’s media relations, strategic messaging, and public information efforts.
