The purpose of the survey is to provide a self-assessment of local and tribal government progress toward 11 prioritized mitigation and adaptation actions, as well as efforts to embed equity into these climate actions.

CDP is a not-for-profit charity that runs the global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts. The world’s economy looks to CDP as the gold standard of environmental reporting with the richest and most comprehensive dataset on corporate and city action. They work with over 810 cities measuring and disclosing environmental data each year to manage emissions, build resilience, protect themselves from climate impacts and create better places for people to live and work.

In 2020, City of Miami was one of 88 cities globally to make CDP's A-List. To score an A, a city must disclose its responses publicly and meet four criteria: have a city-wide emissions inventory, have set an emissions reduction target, have a climate action plan (plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions), and have a climate adaptation plan.
